According to reports, longwas first translated to "dragon" in the Travels of Marco Poloin 1299. And in China's Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), Western missionaries (传教士) translated longas "draco," which is Latin for "dragon."
据报道，传世于1299年的《马可·波罗游记》首次将“龙”翻译为“dragon”。在清朝时期(1644–1911)，西方传教士将“龙”翻译为“draco”——在拉丁语中是“dragon”的意思。
The debate on whether it was right to translate longinto "dragon" took place at home and abroada decade ago. Some people have stated that "dragon"does not really match the Chinese connotations (内涵) of long, and so may misleadWesterners in their understanding of Chinese culture. Others argued that there is a shortage of expressions for dragon in Western languages as it was an exotic (来自异国的) term itself. As such, it was inevitable (不可避免的) for them to borrow the term dragon to describe such culturally profound (深厚的) symbol as the Chinese dragon.
早在十年前，国内外就对“龙”是否应该译为“dragon”产生过争论。有人说，“dragon”与汉语中“龙”的含义并不相符，这可能会使西方人对中国文化产生误解。另一些人则认为，西方语言中缺少表达“龙”的语言，因为它本身就是一个外来语。因此，他们难免会借用“dragon”这个词来形容中国龙这样具有深厚文化内涵的象征。

No matter whichway longis translated, it is worth noting thatthe Chinese dragon is a positive, dignified (庄严的), auspicious, warm and joyful image, much different from that of the Western dragon.
